Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland
Recipe for the Future
Here’s our Recipe for the Future. All we need is you.
We’re cooking up something wonderful: a new home and sustainable, disaster-resilient central headquarters and state-of-the-art kitchen in West Baltimore.
By tripling our meal production capacity, the new facility will allow us to expand the vital services and human connection we provide.
Recipe for the Future is the capital campaign making it all possible. We’ve secured seed funding, partnered with community leaders, developed the blueprints, and even broken ground.
Now we need you — the secret ingredient for bringing our plans to life.

Theron RussellFrequently Asked Questions
Why is Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland conducting a capital campaign?
Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland has outgrown its current facility. The capital campaign supports a new, modern facility that will allow the organization to meet growing demand, operate more efficiently, and remain sustainable for decades to come.
By 2030, one in four Marylanders will be age 60 or older, and the population age 85 and older is projected to grow by 158% by 2045. This facility will help ensure Meals on Wheels can meet future demand reliably and sustainably.
Why build a new facility now?
Demand for Meals on Wheels services already exceeds current capacity, resulting in a waiting list. The existing facility cannot keep pace with growing needs across Central Maryland.
Maryland’s population age 65 and older is projected to grow from nearly 1 million in 2020 to nearly 1.3 million by 2030 and 1.4 million by 2040.
Building now will help Meals on Wheels prepare for future demand while strengthening its ability to serve older adults reliably and sustainably.
What will change as a result of this project?
The new facility represents an investment in regional infrastructure, not simply a new building.
- Increased Capacity: Meal production capacity will increase from 5,000 to up to 15,000 meals per day.
- Expanded Reach: Greater capacity will help reduce waitlists and expand service throughout Central Maryland.
- Improved Efficiency: Modern kitchen design and infrastructure will improve workflow, food safety, and logistics while reducing waste.
- Long-Term Sustainability: The facility is designed to support operations and growth for the next 30 years and beyond.
How many people does Meals on Wheels serve?
Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland serves Baltimore City and seven surrounding counties, reaching approximately 2,500 individuals daily and nearly 5,000 unique individuals annually.
What is the total cost of the project?
The total project cost is approximately $54 million, encompassing land, design, construction, infrastructure, and financing.
The facility will be built in Baltimore City to LEED Gold standards, incorporating solar power, battery storage, and infrastructure for an electric delivery fleet.
These sustainable features are expected to generate long-term savings while strengthening operational efficiency and sustainability.
Why is this project more than just a new building?
This project is a long-term investment in the infrastructure needed to address a growing regional need.
By tripling meal production capacity and strengthening operational infrastructure, Meals on Wheels will be better equipped to address food insecurity, social isolation, and the challenges facing older adults throughout Central Maryland.
It’s not simply about producing more meals. It’s about building the capacity to deliver More Than a Meal for generations to come.
How many volunteers and staff support Meals on Wheels?
Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland is supported by more than 3,000 volunteers annually and nearly 150 staff members who help ensure reliable service across Central Maryland.
How does public funding support the project?
Federal, state, and local funding, including grants, tax credits, and lending programs, helps strengthen the project’s financial structure and maximize the impact of philanthropic investments.
What is the project timeline?
- Property Settlement: August 2026
- Groundbreaking: September 2026
- Target Completion: Early 2028
Where will the new facility be located?
The new facility will be located at 701 Swann Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21229, behind Edmondson Village Shopping Center.
This location provides efficient access to delivery routes and supports continuity of service throughout Central Maryland.
How will meals be delivered from the new facility?
Meals will continue to be prepared centrally and distributed through 21 regional delivery sites. Volunteers will deliver meals directly to clients’ homes, and delivery schedules will remain consistent.
What does it cost to provide a meal?
The fully delivered cost per meal is approximately $10.50. This includes meal delivery, volunteer management, administrative support, and More Than a Meal services that help clients remain safe and independent.
What does “More Than a Meal” mean?
Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland delivers more than nutritious food. Its services also address social isolation, safety, and access to community resources.
Support includes wellness checks, social connection, SNAP enrollment assistance, case management, home safety support, referrals, and crisis response.
These services help aging, homebound, and disabled adults remain safe, connected, and independent in their homes.
