More About the Local Company
In the fall of 2011 the founder of Unwined Candles, Dave Neith, was searching for a way to make a few extra bucks to help support his growing family. Dave and his wife Anna had twin one year old boys as well as a newborn son. After graduating with a degree in video production from the Art Institute of Philadelphia, Dave was hired by a small company in Baltimore, where he met Anna. Dave was looking for something new to do that used more of his creative ability and passion. He wanted a product that he could manufacture at home so he and Anna decided on candles and because they’re wine lovers, they thought the bottom half of wine bottles would work great for their soy candles. After brainstorming with family and friends the name “Unwined Candles” was chosen and the company was started in December of 2011.
For the next year Dave worked in his basement figuring out how to cut bottles and make scented candles. Through trial and error he slowly developed a process of candle making that he still uses today. Each candle is hand made using a simple “green” process, first the labels are removed, then the bottle is cut with a diamond blade saw, the edges are ground to a smooth safe surface, a premium cotton wick is applied to the bottom of the bottle and then 100% soy wax that has been infused with relaxing scents is hand poured into the bottles. After drying, the candle is hand labeled with a letter pressed, embossed label and finished with a beautiful branded cork logo. Each candle is a work of art!
The small company that Dave began in his basement in Sykesville, MD has grown. Unwined Candles has recently moved into a 3500 square foot facility in Randallstown, MD, where they continue to manufacture their candles in the same way Dave did in his basement, by hand one candle at a time.
