48th Annual Volunteer Recognition Event

Our 48th Annual Volunteer Recognition Event was held at the United Auto Workers Hall on South Oldham Street again this year, and it was a great sucess.  In keeping with  this year's theme, "Volunteers are Picture Perfect," everyone was treated to a slide show of photos starring Meals on Wheels Volunteers!

Beatrice Strouse Award
Lois Gross, Board Member

Lois Gross (center in the above photo) is the consummate Meals on Wheels representative. She has been a volunteer for over 30 years and has served for many years on the Board of Directors and the Council of Site Representatives.
She tirelessly promotes Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland in her community by speaking to civic groups, associations and other purposeful organizations. She also regularly seeks out additional volunteers and sponsors to ensure our continued services to people who are homebound.  Also pictured with Mrs. Gross is Marie Doyle, left; and Peggy Sheeler, first Meals on Wheels executive director.

Ernestine McCollum Award
Virginia Hale, Volunteer Extraordinaire

Virginia is a lady who has volunteered since October 1980 and has given over 1,368 hours packing at least once a week in the St. Martin's kitchen.  Virginia has also given many generous gifts over the years to assist the agency and help the kitchen volunteers.  She donated a fax machine, as well as the electrical outlet installation for it, and provided a replacement of the kitchen entrance storm door at the St. Martin's site.Her fellow volunteers state that Virginia ". . . has demonstrated her love and kindness towards her fellow volunteers and the welfare of those in need of MOW assistance."

2008 Special Recognition Award
John Brain, Marketing Committee erMemb

John has been a member of the Marketing Committee since 2001 and has been an invaluable source of innovative program, marketing, and public relations ideas since the beginning of his association with us. John has also served as an effective liason between Meals on Wheels and Towson University, where he has taught on the faculty of their Department of Mass Communication. In 2004, he helped broker productiion of a Meals on Wheels program video, at no cost to MOW, and recently facilitated production of a new video to be produced this year.
