Are you a Walmart or Sam's Club associate in Maryland?  If you are, we want to let you know that Walmart and Sam's Club associates in Maryland now have the opportunity to go to www.mywalmart.com and cast their vote for Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland as their charity of choice in this year's Walmart Associate Choice Program.  Voting will continue until August 6, 2011 and the charity receiving the most votes will receive $100,000 from Walmart to support their cause.

 Meals on Wheels' charitable mission since 1960 is to enhance quality of life for people who are homebound through the provision of nutritious meals, personal contact, and related services.  Last year, over 2,000 Meals on Wheels volunteer delivered over 743,000 meals to 2,964 homebound clients in Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties.  Our program also serves in some limited areas of Frederick and Montgomery counties.

 

 

 

 

Our clients are your family members, friends and neighbors who are homebound due to advanced age, illness, injury, or disability, and are unable to shop for their groceries or prepare their own meals.  Many of them suffer from multiple chronic illnesses that advancing age has worsened.  Over 32% of our clients are over the age of 85.

 

 

 


 

Our clients are visited daily by a compassionate Meals on Wheels volunteer who delivers two nutritious meals a day Monday through Friday, including holidays that fall during the week.  But our program is more than a meal.  Our volunteers spend a few moments with each client to check on how they're feeling that day and to help them maintain contact with their community.  Our volunteers are frequently the first to spot changes in clients' mental health or in their living conditions that might require attention.

 

 

 


WHY WE ARE ASKING YOU TO VOTE FOR
MEALS ON WHEELS OF CENTRAL MARYLAND

Throughout our 51-year history, we have never established a waiting list for service.  However, because this prolonged economic downturn has meant that we are paying more and more for food commodities (as well as fuel costs for our delivery vans), we do not have the resources to feed all those who need us.  Our response has been to establish a "triage" system to help us identify and serve new clients who come to us based on severity of their need.  Simply put, we are currently not able to help all those who request our service.
