"GREEN BUILDING" BOND BILL SLATED FOR INTRODUCTION IN THE
2012 MARYLAND GENERAL ASSEMBLY
"3,000 by 2020"
We've coined a phrase at Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland - "3,000 by 2020." This phrase has taken on significant meaning for us because it sets out a critical goal that our organization will need to achieve in order to carry on our charitable mission over the next 20 years. In line with demographic projections for 2020 and beyond, we will need to prepare for the possibility that a formidable number of aging, frail, economically disadvantaged, and homebound Baby Boomers will require our service in the future. In recognition of that possibility, "3,000 by 2020" translates to doubling the number of clients we now serve daily (1,500) to 3,000 per day by 2020.

In order to continue our charitable mission - to enable people to live independently at home through the provision of nutritious meals, personal contact and related services - we must have the financial resources necessary to increase the production capacity of our home-delivered meals program. Passage of our "Green Building" Bond Bill - Senate Bill 92/House Bill 153 - Creation of a State Debt - Baltimore City - Meals on Wheels Green Building - will help us to achieve our goal by reducing our energy consumption so that future savings in our operating budget can be directed toward increased meal production and delivery to serve a rapidly expanding client population. We want to extend special thanks to our bond bill lead sponsors Senator Bill Ferguson
(D - District 46) and Delegate Pete Hammen (D - District 46), as well as local district Delegates Luke Clippinger and Brian McHale.
Bond Bill Overview
- The total cost of our project is $300,000;
- We are requesting a bond bill match from the state in the amount of $150,000;
- The bond bill match will pay for a badly needed and critical roof replacement and new HVAC rooftop units at our Central Service Facility and Kitchen located at 515 South Haven Street in Baltimore City;
- We have already achieved our share of the $150,000 match and are "shovel-ready."
How You Can Help
Contact your Maryland General Assembly Senator and Delegates and ask for their support for SB92/HB153. The most important legislators to contact are those who are members of the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee and the House Appropriations Committee. Within the membership of those committees, the support of members of the Capital Budget Subcommittees is critical. Click here for a list of committee members.
After you've identified your legislators, you can contact them by doing any of the following:
Write to express your support;
Phone their office to express your support; or
Email to express your support.
And, so that we can thank you for your support, please email gianfort@mowcm.org to let us know you contacted your legislators.
Click here to review a Meals on Wheels slide presentation that will provide you with more information about who we are, what we do, and how passage of our Bond Bill will make a difference in the lives of those who will need us in the future. (Note: the slide presentation takes time to load).
